Confirmed cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection among people in Italy have risen to 25 since early May. In the previous one there were 6 Notice of July 27, which also reported one death in Lombardy. There are 34 provinces with proven distribution of WNV belonging to 7 regions: Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, Apulia, Sicily and Sardinia. One in five cases in a neuroinvasive form

Of the 25 reported cases, 5 were in the neuroinvasive form (4 in Piedmont, 4 in Lombardy, 7 in Emilia Romagna), 6 cases were identified in blood donors (1 in Piedmont, 4 in Lombardy, 1 in Emilia Romagna ), 4 cases of fever (3 in Lombardy, 1 in Veneto), the ISS explains and recalls that the first case of WNV infection in seasonal people was reported in July from Emilia Romagna, in the province of Parma. In the same period, a case of the Usutu virus was reported in Piedmont (Novara).

This year, the institute recalled in the Bulletin, the season of transmission of insect-borne diseases in Italy started early. In fact, the spread of West Nile virus was confirmed as early as May 2023 by the presence of the virus in mosquito tanks and in the country’s birdlife. Therefore, preventive measures for transfusions and transplantations were taken early in the affected areas. Also the ECDC, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, recently issued a warning about invasive mosquitoes and the resulting health risks.
