A white woman wearing a gorilla mask was saw throwing eggs in California, recall gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder on Wednesday as he visited a homeless camp in Venice.

Elder is campaigning to be the state’s first black governor.

In video of the incident, a member of Elder’s security team attempted to push the woman away as she cursed at him and dared him to touch her again.

She then attempted to punch the man in the face, prompting other members of Elder’s security team to intervene. Another woman in the crowd was seen punching another team member in the face.

Many commentators have noted that the woman wearing a gorilla mask while attacking a black man could be interpreted as racist.

Ready to make history

Elder said later on Wednesday that the the egg throwing was not the end of the attack. The security team was also “shot with a pellet gun and hit by other projectiles.”

Provocative, Elder also declared that “the intolerant left will not stop us”.

Elder tweeted a statement regarding the attack on Wednesday night: “Today I kicked off the Recall Express bus tour. Before I even left Los Angeles, my security guard was physically assaulted, shot with a pellet gun and hit with projectiles. The intolerant left will not stop us. Gavin Newsom will be remembered. We will save California.

Elder, from Los Angeles, announced his candidacy for governor in July.

If elected, Larry Elder would become California’s first black governor.

Racially motivated attack?

Many Elder supporters say that because the woman lay the eggs and wear the gorilla mask was white, it was an obvious racial attack.

And many of those same supporters are calling for silence from Democrats for not condemning the attack.

Matt Gorman, director of communications for the National Republican Congressional Committee, highlighted double standards:

Michigan congressional candidate Travis Wines lamented that there would likely be no consequences for the attackers,

Political columnist Benny Johnson compared the scene to some of the ugly and iconic photos from the Civil Rights era:

Latest survey data

Gavin Newsom has aroused the ire of Republicans in California over high taxes, out of control real estate prices, the growing problem of homelessness, and environmental issues such as managing forests to control wildfires.

But perhaps no factor was more important than its strict COVID-19 restrictions.

He didn’t help his cause either when he was seen having dinner at the dear The restaurant “French Laundry” last fall and not practicing any of the COVID restrictions with which it had imposed its fellow Californians.

There were also claims that Newsom’s children returned to class last fall when most California schools remained closed. Newsom claimed the return was partly in person and partly virtual.

Survey data has come and gone over the summer. In July and August, the polls showed Californians were divided on whether to recall Governor Gavin Newsom.

As Election Day approaches, polls have shown support growing for keeping Newsom as governor.

California has not had a Republican governor since Democrat Gray Davis was recalled in 2003 and replaced by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The latest poll figures point to Newsom. A Change Research poll showed Californians voted against the recall by 57% to 42%. SurveyUSA and Trafalgar Group both showed that just over 50% of voters did not support the recall. The Public Policy Institute of California poll showed 58% did not support the recall.

Election day in California is September 14.
