Phillies put JT Realmuto on COVID IL
The Phillies announced this receiver on Thursday morning JT Realmuto was placed on the COVID-19 injured list. Fellow catcher Rafael Marchan comes from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his place on the active roster at the moment.
The team has not yet indicated whether Realmuto has tested positive or is on the COVID list as a close contact or for contact tracing purposes. If tested positive, he would be absent from the club for at least 10 days.
Realmuto, 30, is having the best start of his career in 2021, beating a solid .314 / .418 / .520 with four homers, seven doubles, a triple and three interceptions in his first 33 games. This excellent production comes despite a broken thumb that cost him a lot of training in the spring. Recently Realmuto missed a few games with a minor knee injury, although he was expected to avoid IL for this particular issue.
With Realmuto sidelined for a period of time yet to be determined, the Phillies will hand the catching tasks to Andrew Knapp and the Marchan. This pair certainly can’t be expected to replicate Realmuto’s contributions to the plateau – few seekers could – but Knapp managed a .278 / .404 / .444 line in 89 appearances on the plateau in the year. last. However, he starts off much slower in 2021 and is a .228 / .332 / .345 overall hitter in 712 major league appearances. 22-year-old Marchan is one of the organization’s top prospects and is off to a .250 / .429 / .313 start with 21 Triple-A field appearances. He went 4-for-8 with a home run and a walk in a brief early MLB effort last summer.
