More than 10 Democrats issue statement condemning Ilhan Omar’s comparison between US and Taliban
Representative Ilhan Omar blasted to some of her fellow Democrats for issuing a statement with “Islamophobic tropes” after a dozen condemned her for comments apparently equating the United States and Israel with the Taliban.
In a tweet earlier this week, the congresswoman from Minnesota categorized America and its ally Israel in the same category of terrorist organizations or those that harbor terrorists like Afghanistan, Hamas and even the Taliban.
“We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity,” Omar tweeted. “We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the United States, Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan and the Taliban. “
A caucus of 25 Jewish Democrats discussed condemning Omar (D) for his comments, but ultimately only a dozen put their names on a statement doing so.
“To equate the United States and Israel with Hamas and the Taliban is as offensive as it is misguided,” the statement read in part, before accusing Omar of making comments that provide “false equivalence” and “give cover. to terrorist groups ”.

The fact that only a dozen Democrats could find in themselves the courage to condemn Ilhan Omar’s statements that seem to equate America with the Taliban is testament to the current state of their party.
“We urge Congresswoman Omar to clarify her remarks by placing the United States and Israel in the same category as Hamas and the Taliban,” write the handful of Democrats.
Omar responded by accusing them of issuing a statement filled with “Islamophobic tropes”.
“The Islamophobic tropes in this statement are offensive,” she whimpered. “The constant harassment [and] silencing the signatories of this letter is unbearable.
She accused those who signed the letter of calling her when they needed her help, but refusing to do so to ask for clarification.
It is shameful for colleagues who call me when they need my support to now issue a statement asking for “clarification” and not just to call.

In another tweet, Ilhan Omar criticized Fox News and Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) for suggesting his comments on the United States and the Taliban were controversial.
“It’s prompted directly by articles like this and far-right politicians like this,” she wrote. “And this is made possible by a political culture – in both parties – which often allows and fuels Islamophobia. “

Another squad member came to Ilhan Omar’s defense for his Taliban comments and lambasted Democrats for condemning them.
Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) said she is “tired of colleagues” on both sides who “demonize” Omar.
“Their obsession with watching her is sick,” she tweeted. “She has the courage to speak out against human rights violations, no matter who is responsible. “
I’m sick of my colleagues (both D + R) demonizing @ Keepin_Mr.Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!. Their obsession with watching her is sick. She has the courage to speak out against human rights violations, regardless of who is responsible. It is better than colleagues who look away if that serves their policy. https://t.co/5n9OxZbK8Q

The Political Insider reported last month a growing divide among Democrats between a faction that supports Israel’s right to defend itself and progressives who condemn them for it.
Omar has been quoted several times in reference to this feud, following statements in which she called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “far-right ethno-nationalist” and another where she apparently accused Israel of be the real terrorists.
“The Israeli airstrikes killing civilians in Gaza are an act of terrorism,” she said.
Omar also accused the deputy mayor of Jerusalem of supporting “ethnic cleansing”.

Palestinians deserve to be protected.
Unlike Israel, missile defense programs, like Iron Dome, do not exist to protect Palestinian civilians.
It is unreasonable not to condemn these attacks on Eid week. https://t.co/vWWQfMqBkT

President Biden has said, however, that Israel has the right to defend itself against rocket attacks by Hamas.
“Israel has the right to defend itself when thousands of rockets fly over your territory,” he said.
One of the signatories of the letter condemning Ilhan Omar’s comments, Democratic Representative Dean Phillips (MN), said in May that the silence was deafening from his own party when it came to denouncing the anti-Semitism.
“I’m going to say the quiet part out loud; it is time for ‘progressives’ to start condemning anti-Semitism and violent attacks on the Jewish people with the same intent and vigor demonstrated in other areas of activism, ”Phillips tweeted.

New York Republican Representative Lee Zeldin used the Dozen Democrats’ letter and required Omar be removed from House of Foreign Affairs Committee.
“She should never have been appointed to this committee in the first place,” he said.
