Ryan Fitzpatrick had a strong start to the 2020 season with the Miami Dolphins, but he was still on the bench in favor of Tua Tagovailoa.

At the time, the veteran quarterback let it be known that he disagreed with the decision. In a recent interview with Athletic’s Robert Mays, Fitzpatrick developed these thoughts.

“I have a lot of respect for (Flores) and we have a really good relationship,” said Fitzpatrick. “But I thought it was a joke at first. ‘We put Tua?’ I was devastated. ”

He added, “It was my team… I fought with these guys. I understand how the NFL works. I understand. But let it go the way it did….”

Former Dolphins offensive coordinator Chan Gailey was also taken aback by Flores’ decision to put Fitzpatrick on the bench, saying: “It was a whole new offense [for Tua]. We were just start hitting our stride. We had won two games in a row and scored a bunch of points and moved the ball well. It was a shock to me. “

Tagovailoa had a strong rookie season, going 6-3, completing 64.1% of his passes for 1,814 yards and 11 touchdowns against five interceptions. He also ran for 109 yards and three scores.

However, the 23-year-old will need to be even better in his second campaign with the Dolphins. He has no one to lean on if he struggles, with Fitzpatrick now on the Washington football team.

The Dolphins are now the Tagovailoa team. If he doesn’t impress over the next few seasons, Miami could be looking for a new quarterback. For now, however, we’ll just have to wait and see how the 2021 season plays out.
