The rule among elected officials in California keep being “OK for me, but not for you.”

At Sunday, in a SoFi stadium suite, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and San Francisco Mayor London Breed all appeared in photos with basketball great Earvin “Magic” Johnson at the NFC Championship game not wearing masks like requires it Angels and at the stadium.

The footage is just the latest of ongoing incidents involving elected officials who are not following their own mandates and COVID regulations.

Call out the hypocrisy

The rampant hypocrisy was not lost on Republican State Senator Melissa Melendez, who tweeted, “Toddlers are required to wear masks all day at school. Maybe one day they will be governors or mayors of Los Angeles and they won’t have to follow the rules they impose on others.

According to a report from the Sacramento Bee, in a press conference on Monday morning, Newsom said:

“I was very judicious yesterday. Very sensible. And you’ll see in the picture that I took, where Magic was kind enough, generous enough to ask me for a picture, and in my left hand the mask and I took a picture. The rest of the time, I wore it as it should. Not when I drank a glass of water or anything. And I encourage everyone to do so. And that’s all.”

Official SoFi Stadium rules require masks at all times in the stadium, unless actively eat or drink.

California Republican Party Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson also lambasted the governor’s double standard, saying:

“The whole message @GavinNewsom needs to send to parents in California, that they should always send their kids to school in masks while he ignores his rules and can watch football masks for free. #RulesForYou. In the news related, are we done with your state of emergency now?”

For Super Bowl fans, the restrictions will be stricter

For those attending this year’s Super Bowl game at the same stadium, the rules will be strict.

In addition to wearing a face mask at any time, regardless of vaccination status, except while eating or drinking, proof of vaccination 14 days before will be required, or a negative test result 24 hours before the start of the match.

Not the first time for Newsom or Race

Sunday’s outing to the football game wasn’t Gavin Newsom’s first outing to exempt himself from his state’s mask policies. In November, Newsom was spotted with a large group of people, also indoors and unmasked, at the pricey French Laundry restaurant.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed also violated his own city’s mask mandates. In September 2021, Breed was seen on video dancing without a mask in a crowded jazz club. Breed immediately presented herself as a victim of the “funny police”, implying that her mask indiscretions were OK because she was only “feeling the spirit”.

The Super Bowl will be played on February 13. It’s unclear whether or not any of California’s elected officials will be in attendance wearing a mask, or if they’ll “feel the spirit” of ignoring their own rules again.
