The BRICS have adopted an action plan against terrorism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday as he chaired a virtual summit of the Group of Five Nations.

The summit, hosted by India, brought together Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Brazilian Jair Bolsanaro.

The BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) brings together five of the world’s largest developing countries, accounting for 41% of the world’s population, 24% of global GDP and 16% of global trade.

In his opening remarks, Modi said that India received the full cooperation of all BRICS partners during his presidency and listed various achievements of the consortium.

“Today, we are an influential voice for the emerging economies of the world. This platform has also been useful in drawing attention to the priorities of developing countries,” he said.

The BRICS have created strong institutions such as the New Development Bank, the Emergency Reserve Agreement and the Energy Research Cooperation Platform, he noted. “They are all very strong institutions,” he added.

“However, it is also important that we are not too happy with ourselves and we need to ensure that the BRICS are even more results-oriented over the next 15 years,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the group had achieved several “firsts” and referred to holding the first-ever BRICS digital summit recently.

“This is an innovative step to increase access to healthcare using technology. In November, our water resources ministers will meet for the first time in the BRICS format. It is also the first time that the BRICS have taken a collective position on “Strengthening and reforming multilateral systems”, “Modi said.

“We have also adopted the BRICS Counterterrorism Action Plan,” he said.

The prime minister said that with cooperation between customs services, intra-BRICS trade will become easier.

“There was also consensus to start a virtual BRICS immunization research and development center. The BRICS Green Tourism Alliance is also another new initiative,” he said.
